BEES

By gayanika

Have you seen bees in you garden? Watch them flying from flower to lower watch them
sucking up the nectar with their long flexible tongues. Have you ever caused to
think about the life of these industrious insects?
Bees do not live alone. They live within other members of their large family.
Each amily of bees makes up one colony of group. Each colony has a hive to live in.
A bee hive made up of six sided cells or compartments.
Thousands of bees live in a hive. There are three types of bees in a hive. They
are he queen bee, the drones and the workers. The queen is the head of the colony
of bees. She dose not rule them, but her presence is essential. She keeps the members
of the group together. She has one essential responsibility to perform. She lays eggs.
The drones   are the males in the colony. They are lazy creatures. They do not work.
Heir only function is to help the queen by tertilized eggs and unfertilized eggs produce
lrones. There are about two to three thousand drones in each hive.
Fertilized eggs produce worker bees. Unlike the drones, the works attend to the ill
the work of the hive. They build their home on trees or in the hollow of trees. They fly
out in fields, forests and gardens and collect nectar and pollen. They convert this nectar
to honey and store it in cells. They bring water to the hive. They ventilate     the hive and
also protect it from their enemies. They feed their queen and look after her young once.
Hese are the responsibilities of the worker bees. There a
re about thirty to forty thousand worker bees in each hive.
All these bees- the queen, the drones and the workers live and work together.
